A discussion was started in this thread:
http://www.predsff.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15395 Does the 150cb/5% increase rule only apply to players traded with 1 year or less left on their contract, or does it apply to ALL traded players? Here is wording of rule: Players with more than one year remaining on their contract can have their contracts renegotiated by the team holding their rights. When a contract is renegotiated, the current years salary gets a 10% or 300cb raise, whichever is greater, and the contract can be extended up to the standard maximum of five years. A player with less than one year remaining on his contract can only have his contract renegotiated if he is traded to another team. Once traded, the contract can be renegotiated with a raise of 5% or 150cb to the current year salary, whichever is greater. The contract can be extended up to the standard maximum of five years.

so ineffect you are saying only players with one year contract, so I htink this lowers the chance to trade for a palyer with more than one year, i think the spriti of the rule was to promote trading, this as you are interpreting stifles trading, imo.

So players with 1 year left on their contract from April 1st to March 31st, are players who fit under this logic.....

I would vote for all trades, but I think that the rule need rewording.

If you make a FA pick up and only assign 1 year and they end up being studs the signing team has a sticky situation the following off-season. If they perform well you have 3 options: (1) Let them walk as a UFA. Your great scouting goes to waste as you lose a player for nothing. (2) You mark them as an RFA. You either get the player you want or let them leave for comp points. (3) Offer them as trade bait. Compared to scenarios 1 and 2 this could be the best bet for you as you can receive a better commodity in return rather than paying market price or letting him walk for comp picks or nothing. The 1 year player would appeal to more owners as they get to lock up a player for potentially below market price for up to 5 years and for cheaper than the 350 it costs to renegotiate your own player. So in reality this rule adds more value to 1 year contract players and has no effect on multi-year players as they were never intended to get anything other than 350/10. Multi-year player trade value only decreases to you because you are comparing it to a scenario created by misinformation/misinterpretation. This really should not be open for debate as this has been the rule for day one. I don't know when we started allowing ANY traded player to be reneged for 150/5 but it was never allowed.

Doesnt matter to me one way or the other, i could give a rip less.
Whatever you guys decide. So whos going over all the old trades, and does this mean i have to redo cutlers contract, as i'm pretty sure he had more than one year left on his contract. I will try and look, as him being less is more of an advantage to me now anyway. |

I'd say just the trades done for 2010 have to be reworked. If you got away with it last year that's fine with me, unless someone wants to do the dirty work and look at all the past trades.

I'm no expert on the rules however I do look for consistency between 2 documents, rules and roster listing. If the roster listing shows 1 year in the contract column and the rules say you can ren traded players with 1 year for $150/5%; then if you trade for a player you get to ren for $150/5%.

I agree with Frank....not really looking for a vote on how we want it, but how we have always been interpreting the rule....if we decide Frank is correct, then if you guys want to change it, that needs to be done in a vote...but right now, looking to either the Rules committee, or the charter members to chime in on how we have been interpreting this...looking back on trades through the past couple years, I did not find an instance where anyone with more than 1 year was reneged with a 150cb increase....so it's looking to me that Frank is correct....

well, i have looked at Jay Cutler, he had two years left last year.
his initial declaration was for 5 years in 2006, so 2007 4 years, 2008 3 years, 2009 2 years. |

In the interest of saving all the additional posts about reneg rates, read the section about half way down this post where we basically had this same conversation a year and a half ago (and determined that it was 1yr player = $150/5%, all others are $300/10%).

I can't believe we're having this much discussion on what constitutes a year vs less than vs more than. I think it's pretty obvious that when the rules say "less than a year left," they mean 1 year as listed on the website. If someone wants to change that particular wording, then just put it out there for a vote. Otherwise let's put this to rest.

like i said i dont give a rip one way or the other, but when people try to pull lawyer on me, then we have to analyze the exact words said.
SO to sum up i dont give a rip, i just need to know what to go by. and also, Cutlers contract is invalid then, because i renegotiated him last year, and no one said a thing, so what do i do with him, set his slary back, and what was his salary before i renegotiated him, etc. |

Thanks for digging that up Bryan! so this is done deal - only players with 1 year left can be reneged for 150/5% in trades - all others are subjected to 300/10%

I vote the statute of limitations has expired on all trades/renegs prior to the declaration of RFAs. If someone got away with something, more power to you.

ah i give, not sur ehow to track the rookie bonus that got him to where his salary would be, and i also noticed in the trade, that dwayne bowe had 3 years left on his contract, and was renegotiated to floyds, so then thats only a few that i have noticed, sure i can find more if i looked at all the trades. But i dont care one way or the other, i'm sure i could figure it out, but dont really care at this point.
