I'm very high on Gates, I think this could be an absolute steal. After Boo, Gates was the #2 TE on my target list of UFA's.
Aside from LT, San Diego has nobody else to toss the ball to. Gates is a great pickup IMO Jake, I'm surprised nobody else jumped in the bidding. I woulda stuck in it longer, but am pretty much set at TE for this year with Dallas Clark and Boo Williams. Good luck with Gates, Jake, I think he'll do well for you. |

Bubba Franks, a proven commodity and talented receiver for a good team isn't worth 225 (in your opinion), but a unknown on a crappy team that will have either a rookie or a proven sub standard QB throwing the ball and you're surprised more people didn't jump in on the bidding? Your logic really confuses me sometimes. Granted, I know you're down on Bubba, but Gates as your #2 with McMichael, Freddie Jones, and others out there, I just don't get it.

As far as Jones and McMichael not having better QB situations that Gates, that point is debatable. My "crappy team" comment including the whole situation of SD. Schottenheimer is an idiot. So is Wanstedt, but at least a proven veteran has the chance to be throwing the ball there. Too many good targets in Arizona is a bad argument to make. That didn't harm Shannon Sharpe's numbers in Denver or Brent Jones in San Fran. Gonzo gets his yards when they have had others targets, as well as when they haven't. I'm not going to downgrade Todd Heap if Blatimore ever signs a good receiver. I can go on and on. Just like this arguement could go on and on (and i have a feeling it will). |

. And in terms of track record, I was speaking of my 3 year history in the Frenzy. Only the Squirrels are close in terms of wins and playoff appearances I believe ;)!We'll see which TE has better numbers at the end of 2004... barring injury I like Gates to be a pleasant top 10 suprise (as high as 7th). Meanwhile, Bubba will be languishing in the bottom tiers (around 15-25 IMO), while McMichael and Freddie Jones will finish in the 10-15 range (maybe as high as 7 or 8). For the money I'd take Gates. |

Maybe he won't do as well as I anticipate, but I do like his upside quite a bit. |

From Fantasy Football Mastermind's Charger reporter:
"TE: The Bolts throw the ball to the TEs quite a bit, but they have 3 tight ends who all got looks last year. My guess would be that 6-4, 260 lb Antonio Gates is your best bet, but I doubt I'd draft the guy unless I was in a deep league. Nonetheless, he could end up having a decent season *if* he ends up being the go to guy." For what it's worth... http://www.ffmastermind.com/2004/off...rts/eye141.php |

My rationale for targeting Gates was pretty simple. As a rookie, Gates started only 3 of the first 8 games for the Chargers. He started each game in the second half of the season, and went off for 321 yds and 2 TDS in those 8 games (including a 117 yard effort against Green Bay). He finished the 2003 season, his rookie season, as the 19th ranked TE. (And only 32 total year-end frenzy points off the 7th place finish the Dodgers feel is so elusive!) His competition for pass targets in San Diego is Josh Norman and Justin Peelle. Not to mention the Chargers will most likely be starting a talented but inexperienced rookie who, if he knows what's best for him, will learn to rely on his TE as an outlet.

I'm already regretting going after Boo instead of Gates (who I targeted in virtually every other league).
I'll try to be easy on you Brian, I'll be sure to send ankle socks (they're not as big ;)). Top 7 is all Gates has to reach? I'd be getting nervous lol! |

It's a long season boys. If ya'll seriously expect SD to play like they did Sunday, I'm disappointed.

For what it's worth there are 12 TE's (after Sunday's action) that are on pace for historical Top 5 finishes (based on last years numbers), including:
Eric Johnson Randy McMichael Alge Crumpler Antonio Gates Daniel Graham Todd Heap L.J. Smith Ernie Conwell Chad Lewis Dallas Clark Freddie Jones Erron Kinney Either the TE bar is being greatly raised or some of these guys are going to have some pretty bad games before all is said and done. |

Seriously though, obviously Gates is better than I gave him credit for. While he has a chance, I certainly don't think his week 1 performance makes him a lock for top 7. But if he is, I've learned one important thing at the Minnesota State Fair; everything tastes better deep fried in batter. |

Just for clarification, we're getting pics of this "dirty sock" thing right? Can I use it as my new avatar?
