Question How does this work (in the correct forum)

7I. Renegotiation

Players with more than one year remaining on their contract can have their contracts renegotiated by the team holding their rights. When a contract is renegotiated, the current year s salary get s a 10% or 300cb raise, whichever is greater, and the contract can be extended up to the standard maximum of five years.

A player with less than one year remaining on his contract can only have his contract renegotiated if he is traded to another team. Once traded, the contract can be renegotiated with a raise of 5% or 150cb to the current year salary, whichever is greater. The contract can be extended up to the standard maximum of five years.

I understand the above passage, however my question is how this works with the rookie contract escalators. Here is what I mean, if I signed L. Maroney to a 2 year deal could I turnaround and renog and bump his salary up $300 and go for five years. Is he still under the original contract for escalators. If not for $300 bucks I may have just saved a boatload in potential escalators.

Of course he could flame out and I would be worse off for giving him the increase. Just trying to figure out if we have this "loophole" covered or if is just not worth examining further.

The escalators are in place for the entire rookie contract (up to 5 years or the rookie cap), whether renegotiated or not. At least that's how I understand it.

Only way to escape the bonus escalators are to cut the guy.

For the same team. So if cut, and someone else picks him up, new team does not pay bonuses. Sounds like no loophole then. Makes sense.

Though of course they stay with the player if he is traded and reneg'd prior to 5 years.

I think we may want to just spell this out somewhere. Basically, no matter how long a rookie deal is for the player is eligible for escalators for the first five years of his deal unless his initial deal is terminated (and he joins another team as a FA).

This just seems to be a little confusing but I am sure we can hammer something out.
