Well, it's cut-down day in paradise... and here's what's happening in the Opihi camp:
Developmental Squad add WR Michael Clayton, 5 year contract add RB Mewelde Moore, 4 year contract Active Squad promote WR Ashley Lelie to active Active Contract Years Charlie Garner, 1 year Emmit Smith, 1 year Derrick Mason, 2 years Ike Hilliard, 1 year David Givens, 4 years Marcus Pollard, 1 year Jason Elam, 1 year Adam Vinatieri, 1 year Carolina D/ST, 1 year 2004 Draft picks Released WR James Newson RB Clarence Farmer Injured Reserve L. Toefield M. Robinson (note: not sure where we go for "official" injury information at this point in the preseason. If either of these two aren't elligible to be placed on the IR, please let me know ASAP and I'll change plans accordingly) This should make me all square with my roster.:whistle |

I think in order to put Toefield and Robinson on IR you need to provide some evidence that they are indeed questionable or worse for week 1. Guys like Shipp, Boldin, Bennett, Buckhalter, etc are clearly out week 1, so IR on them is easier to accept, but Toefield and Robinson have only had "nagging" preseason injuries that would generally not keep either out of the week 1 games (at least as far as I know). I guess we could temporarily accept them as IR canidates, but if the week 1 injury reports don't support the destination they'd have to be declared active or released. I'd feel more comfortable however with a report stating these guys won't be playing week 1. Anyone else have a take on this? |

Mike, I'd agree with your take. I have no information about Toefield, but I do have the local coverage of Robinson. The way they are covering it around here is that Marcus is resting to be ready for the start of the season. I fully expect Marcus not to be ready by the start of the season, but that hasn't been reported anywhere that I've seen. I'm not sure if that effects the option of allowing these guys to go on IR pending the week 1 reports. Knowing what I know of Robinson, I expect to see him no better than questionable for week 1 when the first report comes out.

I was honestly unsure of how to handle this. Both guys have been on the "didn't play" list because of "injuries" in the preseason... but I agree, they're not in the same league as Shipp, Boldin, Anderson, etc. I'll do whatever the league thinks is fair. I checked the rules, and it says they have to be declared on the official injury report by the team... but I don't think the NFL has an injury report during the preseason. Regardless of how my situation resolves, we probably should update the rules to clear this up in the future!

Followup... If the league (or rules committee) decides that either of these guys (or both) are not IR elligible, then go ahead and cut them. We'll take the cap hits accordingly.

The spirit of the IR should come it to play here as well IMO, guys like Gordon, and Toefield, and Robinson are not going to miss time wk 1 (at least not IMO). Whereas, guys like Shipp, and Anderson, and Bennett, and Boldin, and whatnot are clearly out. Again, I suggest we temporarily allow the moves until the wk 1 injury report comes out, but if they aint listed as questionable or worse they have to be activated or cut. |

Hey Mike, you know me... I'm much more of a SPIRIT OF THE RULES guy than a Letter of the Rules guy. So either way is fine. I've been trying to find a definite report from either the Jags or the Vikes... but so far to no avail.

-- Vikings & Robinson at Odds? -- FFMastermind.com senior fantasy writer and Vikings Update correspondent John Holler reports there could be trouble in paradise between the Vikings and WR Marcus Robinson. Robinson, who lost his starting job after missing time with a hamstring injury once described by HC Mike Tice as "very, very, very minor," was seen in the press box during the Vikings-49ers game last weekend and wasn't happy about it. He won't make the trip to Seattle for Thursday's preseason finale. RB Michael Bennett, OT Bryant McKinnie and S Tyrone Carter also won't be making the trip to Seattle.Tue Aug 31, 2004 --from FFMastermind.com ------------------------------------------ Hmmmm..... |

Mike... go ahead and cut Toefield. I've seen nothing to indicate that he has any lingering injuries. And if you want to do the same for MRob, that's fine. Otherwise, my roster app page looks good.

-- Jags Injury Update -- The Florida Times-Union reports Jags DE Brandon Green, who missed most of his rookie season with a fractured kneecap, could end up making his first NFL start Thursday because of a leg bruise that continues to limit left DE Paul Spicer. HC Jack Del Rio said Spicer, who missed the preseason opener with a foot injury, would be a gametime decision against the Patriots. The Jaguars' injury situation improved this week with the return of CB Juran Bolden from a quadriceps injury. OG Mike Compton (thumb surgery) also was back, and rookie RB Rich Alexis joined FB Marc Edwards and RB LaBrandon Toefield in returning. RB Fred Taylor, RB Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala and TE George Wrighster will miss Thursday's game with foot injuries.Wed Sep 1, 2004 --from FFMastermind.com ----- It's official... Toefield is NOT injured anymore. Go ahead and assess my OPIHI the cap hit for cutting him. |

Okay... the first edition of week 1 NFL injury reports list MRobinson as "Questionable" and Toefield's not even on it. So the OPIHI will take the cap hit and officially release Toefield. I guess we get to keep MRob on our IR list... since the rules say "questionable" qualifies. Thanks for being patient with this, Mike!
