I got home from church late this afternoon and checked my fantasy teams... and was SHOCKED! to see that in this Frenzy League, I had two bye week players starting. WHAT?!?!? I quickly drove down to work to look for the email lineup notification, so I could sent it to the Commish and demand that my starting lineup be changed... only to find that I couldn't find the aforementioned email. :Banghead :Banghead :Banghead :furious :rant WHAT?!?!?!

And for the first time in my fantasy career, I realized I failed to submit a starting lineup... I was so upset with myself... only to see that despite his team getting shell-shocked by the Chiefs, my man Travis Henry came through and pulled out an incredible victory for my OPIHI.

I would have hated myself knowing I had Kevin Faulk's breakout game sitting on my bench because of my bonehead move (or lack thereof). I was sure I'd submitted my lineup on Friday when I did my other two leagues... but I guess I goofed.

All Opihi players breathe a collective sigh, knowing that their owners major screw up didn't cost them a hard-fought game.

Unfortunately, Jake forgot to enter in the 20 point penalty for failure to submit a lineup, thus indeed handing the Opihi a boneheaded loss by a mere 4.15 points.

I have to say, I was shocked by the error! Jim is hardcore usually.

Give me a fricken break...

I know... it's in the rules... I just looked it up... dang... suck all the joy out of playing...

No room for grace in this league...

So what, if I hadn't have posted the above post... then the 20 points wouldn't have been added?

Joy to the world. The rules prevail.

Actually I had the deduction in there when I updated last night, but Jake's file obviously hadn't accounted for that yet.

Sorry man, I know it sucks.

I don't know if this will help sooth the pain at all, but the Dodgers got hit with the same penalty a week or 2 ago when he forgot to submit a lineup, and he's the one that pointed it out.

Though my penalty hurt a lot less since i got my butt handed to me penalty or no penalty.

Personally, I think the penalty is something to look at in the off season. I think we have enough other catches in the league to make sure everyone is paying attention. I think 20 points for missing a lineup is harsh.

My wife called me this morning... she's the executive secretary for the CEO of one of the top Hawaii businesses... she got a call from her boss (the CEO) who was standing at the airport check-in counter because the airlines didn't have his e-ticket... she'd made the reservation, but forgot to have it actually ticketed. As she expressed her frustration with herself in the very real-world mistake, I made a decision NOT to tell her about my fantasy snafu about lineups...

It's amazing how God finds ways to help me put things in perspective from time to time...

And Mike, to answer your question, no it doesn't sooth any pain to find out that the Dodgers had to eat 20 points a few weeks ago. My pain isn't soothed by others' misfortune... now, if you were to tell me that the Liquid Swords played with an inelligible player who hadn't taken enough credits this semester... so they'd be hit with a miniscule 5 point penalty... THAT would sooth a little pain!

I know there's nothing that can be done about this past weekend. So everything that I say from here on in is for the good of the league, and not trying to cover my butt...

I understand the intent of the rule is to make sure we don't have owners who check out and abandon their responsibilities in managing their team... but most of us here are doing a fine job in that dept. I think we could have a rule that said if there's two weeks in a row where lineups aren't submitted, then we need to penalize... otherwise, let's allow for a bit of grace here, gang. Things happen... even total slips of memory!

Not to add salt to either of your wounds, however in rereading the rules I just noted that a 250cb cap hit is assessed as well.

Quote:
6C. Starting Lineups

...
Line-ups must be submitted via the line-up submission link on each team page. Using the line-up submission pages will automatically e-mail the line-up you choose to your opponent and the commissioner. In the event of a service outage, you can be e-mail your line-up directly to the commissioner, however try to include your opponent in the e-mail as well. E-mail time-stamp will be used as 'proof' of timely submission. If no starters are named in time, the previous week's starters will be used (regardless if the players are active that week or not) and the team will be assigned a 20 point penalty for that weeks game. Further team will take a 250cb cap hit penalty each time a lineup is not submitted timely.
Also, for some background on the rule, we have had teams fail to submit lineups over the years and somehow continued to get wins, particularly the 1st year, so this was put into place to majorly discourage such activity. It's harsh, and it should be harsh. Each week I submit lineups in all my leagues on TUESDAYS just in case, then I make adjustments later in the week as necessary. It's not like lineups are locked in stone the minute they're submitted. We can and do allow changes up till gametime on Sundays at 1pm.

Jim I believe the penalty puts you over the cap, meaning a cut will be required, Brian will still have some cap room after the penalty is assessed according to the numbers I have here at work.

Sorry guys.

I can see merit to this, although I might amend it to be that the 20 point penalty and 250cb cap hit penalty would be assessed after the failure to submit a lineup a second time (or more) in any given season, regardless of whether or not the weeks were back to back.

Sorry man, these do seem a bit harsh. I've never personally been hit with this particular penalty. I thought we just defaulted to the previous lineup of last week if someone didnt submit their lineup. Anyway, i'd be willing to look into this in the offseason. Once in a long while is a mistake, twice in a row is a trend.

Mike, I was aware of the 250cb hit, I thought I mentioned that in my original PM as well. Either way, I already had taken it out of my personal roster spreadsheet.

As far as the merit of the penalties, I don't really understand the importance of having harsh penalties. If you have a team with solid starters, and no depth, and your starters don't change week to week, why require a duplicate posting of the lineup? If we are worried about competitive balance, I think a larger problem is incomplete lineups. This may not be the place to start that debate (but what the heck).

Mike, you may be right... but when I read those rules (before posting my original rant), I interpreted it to mean that FURTHER incidents would require a 250 cap hit.

I'll leave the interpretation up to the 3 commissioners... and I'm not the kind of person who "takes his ball home" whenever things don't go his way... but if this results in me having to cut someone just to be under the cap thing... I'm going to have to give serious consideration to my next step in this leauge (and I'm not talking about cap space either). That's not a threat... not at all... just would put this league in the NFL category (no fun league) for me... not sure that's worth the time & energy I put in.

But make whatever decision is best for the whole league... I'll have to deal with what comes down from high.

Peace,
JIM

Jim,

This rule wasn't written just to penalize you. That part of the rulebook was there the past 2 years and has been unchanged. The penalties imposed were to ensure solid ownership at a time when the league was still getting its feet wet so to say. We had a ton of issues year 1, and lineups were often a nightmare.

Do I agree that now that we have have a very good group that a rule such as this should be changed? Yes. In fact I already endorsed your suggestion with a slight recommendation.

The last thing I'd want to see is a good solid owner who I have a great amount of respect for quit the league over something as stupid as this, but at the same time we should follow the rules this year, but make sure this issue is addressed in the off-season.

Until I reread the rule I hadn't realized their was a cap penalty in addition to the points, its harsh, agreeably too harsh for a 1st offense, but it IS a documented rule. Again, I think we can fix this quirk up in the off-season. BTW, Dodgers previously stated that he understood there to be the cap penalty himself.

As for the wording, it's intended to mean: "further, in a addition to the 20 point penalty, the team will be be assesed a 250cb cap penalty for each offense." At least in clean legible english thats the intention of the rule as written.

Again, I'd hope you can put your immediate anger and emotions to the side, and retract your ultimatum, you're a part of the reason the Frenzy is growing into such a strong league. You've done a great job rebuilding your team, and are IMO one of the top 2 teams this year. Further, your humor, and dedication add a lot to the league. Don't let this one boneheaded error and the unfortunate penalties that resulted ruin it all for you. Instead, buck up and kick all our asses over the next 6 weeks and get that playoff spot you so deserve!

BTW as for a cut, releasing the Cleveland D would get you 1 cb under the cap according to my numbers, it sucks, but is hardly going to have a significant impact on your season, particularly since you already have a stong Bucs Defense.

Actually, I can't release the Cleveland D... because that would put me under the 5 TE/K/D rule and generate another penalty (one I've already had to suffer, due to another error in judgement).

I'm not trying to issue ultimatums... I've enjoyed being in this league... and it's really stretched my skills in fantasy football.

I won't abandon the team in mid-season... but I have to admit, as of right now, my heart's not in it much anymore. It's not a question of being pissed off at a stupid mistake and having to suffer the consequences... I've already resigned myself to that. This just smacks as being unfair and unjust.

I'm not a loosey-goosey "anything goes" to-hell-with-the-rules kind of guy. And yep, your point is well taken... that has been a rule since whenever... and I misread it when I checked it out last night. But I'm serious about this becoming the "No Fun League."

Am I the only one?

Well I would hate to see you quit over something as small as this. In the grand scheme of things its pretty low on the totem poll. I also sympathize with you Jim, losing and taking penalties to such a degree are pretty harsh, especially considering the relatively harmless oversight. I hope you reconsider. I love this league and while some of the details required to play in a league like this are quite cumbersome, its necessary because of the activity required in such a league. I can definitely see a warning system coming into play next year. Just reconsider and make this decision when you're not so high on emotion.

Please don't read this thread as my quitting... or even a threat to quit... I'm just reassessing the amount of effort/energy it takes to be in this league, with the amount of joy one gets out of it (and "joy" to me doesn't mean always having to win, either). That's all. Maybe it's a tiny thing in the grand scheme of things... but in another way, it points to a much larger issue/problem.

And I know I'm still in the emotion-stage regarding the weekends' loss. I'll get over that (actually, I'm already over the loss, it's the 250 cbs penalty that's pissing me off)... but the larger issue remains.

Thanks for your concern, though... and encouragement.
