Default Renegotiation Math Question

Newbie Question.

LB LTimmons drafted 2007 with 2.08 selection, 2010 (473/2) going to
2011(520/1) + 231 cb rookie contract bonus (4th ranked LB 2010 for 2nd round pick) = 751. As 2 year player I can renegotiate his contract by
March 31st for 300 cb. I don't want to do that since 2011 salary would be 751 + 300 = 1051 for a LB.

My question is does the 840 cap for 2nd round LB come into play for renegotiated rookie contract or does renegotiation void that cap. I would reneg if 2011 salary was 840 but not 1051.

Answer helps with RFA and franchise decisions...

Default Re: Renegotiation Math Question

Renegotiation is done against 2010 salary. So his salary would be renegged to 773/#yrs - this would go against 2010 salary cap. The next step is to add the 10% auto raise in 2011. Thus his salary would go to 850cb. Then we add in rookie bonus. The cap in the Rookie Bonus section only refers to how high adding the bonus can take his salary too. Once his salary hits the max salary, no more rookie bonuses will be applied. So if, as you state, his cap would be 840cb, he would not receive a bonus for his 2010 performance, and his salary for 2011 would remain 850cb.

Make sense?
