Is there a rule that says a team can't trade an already drafted player in this years draft if they wanted to? I don't see it in the rules, but I thought I heard or read somewhere that they player had to be under contract before they could be traded.

Yes, you can trade a drafted player. The only stipulation is that you must first declare contract years. So essentially, ask whomever you are trading with how many years they want to assign the player and post that. Then post the trade.

From rules 7E:

Players CANNOT be traded without their contract years 1st being assigned by the original team.

This isn't in SAC'D rules but should probably be added as they are in Frenzy for clarification:

All players must have designated years assigned by their salaries prior to being traded. This means any rookies and/or UFA players during the off season cannot go to a new team without specific contract years being named. No trades involving off-season RFA players can be officially posted until the mid-August declaration deadline.

I also think that roster status (active, taxi, practice) would need to be defined for the drafted player as well.

Actually, I take that back. I don't believe roster status needs to be declared yet...just the contract years.

Actually, I would say Roster designation needs to be made, along with the contract years - that is part of the contract. We always have to put any FA's on our roster before being able to trade them, including any cuts to make them fit. It should be same with Rookies.

OF course should work this out with your trading partner. But I think the drafting team definitely needs to have room on their roster to fit them in before trading them. Not usually an issue.

I agree with Burt on this. Both years and roster assignment needs to be declared prior to trade. So each team must have roster space, contract years and cap space (if applicable) on whatever roster assignment the player is given (active, taxi or practice).
