While scouting the UFA defenses for a potential 2012 Burner Def I decided to review the scoring rules. It occured to me that if the Jets make good on their desire to go for more 2 point conversions and that counted towards Jet Def scoring they could be a good choice. Rules state QB, RB, WR or whoever is involved with score gets some points but NYJ Def/spec team doesn't so no extra incentive to go for Jets (though they do have a nice defense!).
I did see this in the defensive scoring and am confused: The following TD scores will NOT count against a Defenses Points Against: Interception Returns, Fumble Recoveries, and Safeties [ in section 13A, last line] I assumed that the final score determined how many points a defense received for scoring bonus but this sounds like it is final score minus points scored by interception returns, fumble recoveries and safeties.

I assumed it was the final score, too.
Anyone know the history behind this? It came before me. |

For a defense to be scored against they actually have to be on the field.
Interception returns, fumble recoveries, and safeties are all plays that occur when the offense is on the field and it turns the other way at no fault of the defense, therefore these scores don't count against the defense in scoring.

Thanks, Mike. Makes sense.
Glad that the website knows how to correctly add up the proper scoring! |

Hypothetical:
Jacksonville beats Cinncinnati 20-17 and I have Jack Def... Cinncinnati scored TD on interception return for TD. Points against says - 16-20 = 1 11-15 = 2 6-10 = 3 I get 2 since 17-6 = 11? Extra point counts against Def, right? Otherwise I get 3 since 17-6-1 = 10. Is this how we have been scoring it? These are very small amounts of points and probably wouldn't change much in terms of results. I am just surprised!

extra points & 2-point conversions go against the defense...
TDs are six points... So under your hypothetical scenario, you'd get 2 points for the 11 points scored against the Jax D. |

Jim is correct.
FWIW, it's fairly typical in many leagues to score defenses this way, which is why MFL has a specific rule to exclude these types of scores from counting against the defense. I suppose we could have pulled PAT's from the equation as well, since that's generally a Special Teams play, however, I believe the argument was made that the defense is generally on the field for the PAT to prevent potential 2 point conversions and thus we all agreed to count PAT & conversions against the D as well. It was over a decade ago, and we were somewhat limited by the scoring rules available to us when we developed the scoring, but I believe that is how it shook out.
