Default 3 Multi-Year contracts, increased cyber cap hit

The basic idea here is to increase the cap hit for releasing players with multiple years left on their contract. The current method to calculate the cap hit is a base 20% of the current contract year value (which is applied either 100% to the current year during the hard cap period, or 50% current year and 50% following year during the soft cap period). The proposed method is to add an addition 10% of the contract value for each following year be added to the cap hit (still being applied 100% to the current year during the hard cap period and 50-50 during the soft cap period). The calculation would work out like this:

If a player is signed to a 4 year, 1000cb contract, his contract looks like this:

Year 1:1000
Year 2: 1100
Year 3: 1210
Year 4: 1331

If this player is cut in year 1, his cap hit would be 565 (1000*20% + 1100*10% + 1210*10% + 1331*10%). If this player is cut in year 2, his cap hit would be 475 (1100*20% + 1210*10% + 1331*10%). If this player is cut year 3, his cap hit would be 376 (1210*20% + 1331*10%). If this player is cut year 4, his cap hit would be 267 (1331*20%). Thus, a player with multiple years left on a contract carries a stiffer penalty when released.

Previous contracts would be grandfathered in, and only contracts in 2004 and forward would carry this penalty.

The content of this post have been deleted as upon further reflection I was able to integrate the proposal into the app without difficulty. I've changed my vote to yes as it's been proposed as well.

Opihi voted in favor... and then saw Mike's proposal. That would be fine, too. I feel as though I've been using a "loophole" in the past seasons by being able to cut players who have extended contracts and only face a 1-year cap hit. It's easier to keep it that way... however, this proposal is much more "sporting"!

Jim, when I went back through the original thread on this subject, I read the conversation much differently than I did the first time through. To me, your comments make it seem like you want the cap hit to be spread out throughout the length of the contract (ie, if there are three years remaining, there are three years worth of contract hits). I just want to make sure we are on the same page that the penalty is still only for one year, it's just bigger, right?

Correct... it's still a one-year cap hit... but a BIGGER one to compensate for the extended years on the contract that are being nullified.

So I think we're still on the same page!

Again, this post has been deleted to avoid confusion since upon reflection the current proposal will be just fine.

Mike, I would think that either proposal would be tracked just as easy, but you're the tracker and excel master (at least your stuff looks a lot prettier than mine), so I'll leave that up to you.

Your way of doing the math increases the hit, so that's fine with me. We can adjust the poll if you like so your proposal is the main proposal.

The increased hit is basically counting the signing bonus from year 1 of the contract, wheras you only account for each future year. Otherwise the math is the same.

I just think it's simpler for nme to creat (which I've aleready created a demo) using the method I've described, but I can look into seeing if I can make yours work if you'd like.

BTW, I think the grandfather clause definately needs to be added to the proposal.

Check out the last sentence of the proposal then.

Actually Brian, DOH! I figured out an easier way to work with your scale that will result in much less work on my end.

Basically I'll just setup a formula to calulate a 10% signing bonus for each remaining year. I can accomplish that with just 1 additional column, although I'll add a 2nd showing the total cap hit if a player was to be released.

DOH! Missed that too!

BTW, I'm changing my vote to reflect that the original proposed scale is fine as I can accomplish it easier than I thought. I'm also gonna delete my original post with the other scale to keep folks from getting too confused.

Voted no but then read through the rest of the thread (probably should have done that first but I thought I remembered the basic gist of it). Anyhow, upon further reflection if you could change my vote to YES that would be appreciated!

Thanks and sorry about that.

Just to let you all know, I updated the 2004 roster app last night to reflect this change.

On the app you will note 2 purple colums (after the 5 years of salaries). The 1st column indicates the signing bonus hit (if any) you would take if you cut a player that season, the 2nd column indicates the total cap hit to release that player (the 20% of current salary and the signing bonus).

I know that the existing contracts will be grandfathered in, but I thought you might want to see how this would shake out. When a player is cut I'll just enter a zero in the signing bonus column for players that were grandfathered before this rule passed.

I'll probably inicate the grandfathered contracts by changing all the grandfathered player names to 1 color (say navy) with the non grandfathered players any other color.
