I've moved this post from another thread as I believe it deserves it's own attention.
I just want to note that I'm a big fan of our current division rivalries, and would not like to see that change in any case (if we were to expand somwhere down the line). I like the crazyness of the East division having teams from Philly, Buffalo, Chicago, and Aiea, Hawaii (heck only 2 out of 4 can be considered Eastern lol). I've been thinking that maybe we should consider renaming our divisions, using some kind of legendary football names or theme instead of geographical locations, since our divisions are clearly NOT representative of good geography! |

How about we allow each division to choose the name amongst themselves, with the stipulation that the name must be that of a player enshrined in the Hall of Fame? Just last name possibly?

I don't care what we call the divisions I just want to split each series this year and I will be happy.

As far as naming, I am strongly in favor of allowing each division to choose their name independtly, once we agree on the format (ie, Hall of Famer's last name, etc). A while back we renamed our money league's two divisions of five teams each. We decided that the league as a whole would decide together the two divisions names. We had a 6-4 majority of the two names. Everyone agreed my divisions name was the Grant Division (after Bud Grant as we are a Minnesota league). The five in our division wanted the other division to be the Lombardi Division, since we love to hate the Packers. One of the guys in the other division is from Wisconsin, so he supported that as well. However, the other four guys prefered the Landry division. Thus, we have four guys in one division unhappy with their division name. We should avoid that if at all possible, and let each division pick their own name. |

I like the idea of using hall of famers and having each division choose the name amongst themselves.
Hey, Eastern brethren... I'm not a Bears fan (sorry Jeremy), however, I have a huge amount of respect for a couple of their RB's from the past, specifically Gayle Sayers and Walter Payton. I'd like to toss those names out for consideration among my Eastern rivals. How bout that, I didn't even go for the homer pick with Levy, Kelly or OJ! |

Sweetness works for me. In fact I think I might prefer the Sweetness division to the Payton division...
Okay, not really but I would be fine with the Payton division. |

I hope you're saying that the fact Montana is the greatest QB ever is not up for debate, and not that Montana is going to be the name of our division, and that is not up for debate. Actually, now that I think about it, I'd argue less against naming our division Montana, than I would against him being the greatest ever. I still like what Unitas did with that ball he had to throw around. The 92 yard drive was awesome to watch though ("the Catch" was before my non-viking football watching time).

I guess I don't have any say in the "Montana" debate but it sounds like a state to me. Which would be great if all the teams were from Montana...

Hmm... any love for the STAUBACH or DORSETT division?!? How about we "Easterners" go back even further to one of the greatest all-purpose players ever to strap on a leather helmet... JIM THORPE!

![]() I think the 2 I proposed are some universally respected figures regardless of the team they played for... and trust me, I am no fan of the BEars, but these are 2 of the greatest and CLASSIEST RB's of all time IMO. I still get choked up watching Brian's Song ;)! And Sweetness, I'm sorry, but the guy was ALL class, hard not to love him as a player and a person. I can't honestly say I've seen much of what Jim Thorpe did, just a wee bit before my time , I've seen a lot of Sayers video clips and grew up watching Payton, so thus my proposal ;).

Red Grange (Galloping Ghost) Jim Brown Johnny Blood (McNally)

I'll go with whatever "format" the league decides... guess I'd probably be in favor of naming things after some "classic" player (ie. >30 years out of the league) or coach... or something altogether different (like some football-related term, item, etc.). I have no big ideas right now... just not too eager to pick recent player that, although they were great, I found myself rooting against in my younger days, based on my own personal loyalties.
Let me say this, if we go with the recent NFL players, there will be NO STEELERS who get named as the Eastern division "figurehead". And I'll go down swinging on that one!!! :box |

How about Bronco Nagurski(sp)? He's gotta be one of the greatest all time all around players. While I'm sure it won't get a second, I'll also nominate Paul Giel for the west. While he didn't play professionally (he chose baseball instead) he was an All American in college (and this has nothing to do with our shared last name. Nothing at all).

Can we please not age discriminate? I barely recognize these old fuddyduddies you guys all mention. I'm sticking with my
Montana nomination. I could be persuaded to be named the OJ division. Naming us after a true killer would be fearsome indeed. :whistle |

I still like the idea of the East relating itself to the class and greatness of SWEETNESS...
I love the idea of the Walter Payton division, but I can be happy as the Gayle Sayers Division as well. And I am NOT a BEARS FAN! |

I would certainly second either Payton or Sayers for our division name. And as long as we're vetoing teams, I cannot bring myself to like ANY Cowboy or Raider. Sorry.

Can we get a consensus opinion on renaming our division? I think it'd be nice if we had unaminity in the decision. I see 3 of the 4 of us can support Walter Payton, while Jim would prefer an older player. Gayle Sayers has also been placed on the table as well, and I know myself and the Undead would be fine with him as well, but I'm not sure where Matt and Jim stand. My preferance would be Walter Payton, but hey, that's me. I'm sure Jeremy will support the use of any Chicago Bear lol! As a side not to the league, I really like the idea of naming our divisions in honor of NFL hall-of-famers, and having each division choose who to name it after. I think we should consider as a league whether any hall-of-famer will do (my pref) or should we limit it to those who've only played recently (say past 25 years), or those who haven't played recently (say over 25 years). How do you guys all feel on this? |
