2.9 TE LJ Smith, Philadelphia

The Predators are pleased to select TE LJ Smith. We've targeted him for quite some time, and took a calculated risk he'd still be here when we traded down 4 spots. The risk paid off, and we picked up a 2nd next year from the Mutts. Not bad!

Smith may be the best pure pass catcher among the rookie TE's, and will give Lewis a run for his money in 2003. He has good-to-great speed, concentration and hands, and can catch the ball in a crowd. He caught 30 or more balls in each of his last three seasons, and led Rutgers in receptions last year with 32/384 and 3 scores.
