I disagree with your reading. The bolded part of your statement starts with "a player with less than one year reamaining on his contract...". The way I see it, if you are currently looking to renegotiate a players contract, you look at their current situation and which category they fall into. A traded player doesn't get to the second category until the last year of their contract, which would then require him to be traded to another team.
