Go to the nearest Best Buy or Circuit City and ask them if they have any highspeed internet deals with one of your local cable companies. Usually if you purchase a cable modem from them you'll get all kinds of deals with the cable company plus the cable modem is usually free after a mail-in-rebate (looking at about $70 of initial investment).
When I moved to Indy, I went to Circuit City, purchased a cable modem ($70). I signed up for cable internet with Comcast via Circuit City. Doing so I received an $85 mail-in-rebate for the cable modem (+$15!!!!). Then I also received $100 in Comcast Cash through Circuit City, $50 Comcast Cash through Comcast. Now I'm +$165 after the mail-in-rebates.
Signing up through Circuit City also gave me cable internet for $19.99/month for the first 6 months. After that it goes up to $29.99/month....but when that 6th month starts call up your cable company and tell them you'd like to cancel your internet at the end of the month because you're going to switch to DSL since it'll be cheaper than the $29.99 your cable internet will go up to. They don't want to lose your business to DSL so they'll let you have the $19.99 deal for another six months. Then you just repeat the whole process. It just worked for me after my 1st six months; plus, a friend has been doing this with Comcast for the past 2 1/2 years.
Also if you want digital cable, you can usually sign up at CC or Best Buy too and receive even more mail-in-rebates....I got another $100 in Comcast Cash. Essentially in my first 6 months in Indy, my cable internet and digital cable was free. Now I'm paying about $73/month for digital cable w/HBO & Showtime and cable internet.
I'm all wireless. No land-line phone, only cell and wireless internet at home.
