I think it is a pretty similar concept. One team is trading a tangible assett (a pick or player) for an intangible asset, which in both cases is an exclusive right to a player at a predetermined contract. In the RFA scenario, Player A can exercise a match, or decline a match. He can take the player at the highest bid, or he can pass on him. You claim he has the right to accept compensation to decline the match.

In the draft scenario, Team A has the right to draft a player in a particular slot. Another team offers compensation to that team in order for that team to not draft (or exercise an exclusive option to select) a particular player.
