Should we adjust the Rookie Salary Scale and add a 4th round to the Rookie Draft?
It is proposed that the current rookie salary scale is too high, and only rookies that turn out to be superstars ever earn their rookie contracts. To counter this issue with the current rookie scale, a new scale based on much lower starting salaries, but including incentive bonuses is proposed.
The new scales pay for performance, but still reward good later round selections. The base salaries are higher for first round selections, and the bonuses are higher as well. The bonuses for 2nd round selection are 75% of the 1st rounders, the 3rd rounders are 50% of that of the 1st rounders, and the proposed 4th round selections’ bonuses are 25% of that of the 1st Rounders. The rookie contracts would also include a ceiling, at which no further performance bonuses would apply, but they would still receive their standard 10% raise.
The idea of this proposal is to allow younger players to be used more quickly on the active roster, but ensures that no player will receive a salary too far below competitive fairness.
