I still think it's a good indication of the overall strength of a team. You can have a solid, competitive team that loses some close ones to good teams, and still gets rewarded with a playoff birth. As opposed to being in a weaker division and having a better record (ala the NFC East for so many years, or the NFC South a few years ago, etc.).
