Cut Deuce McAllister

In one of the largest cap hits I've seen, and I've seen a lot of them, I am releasing Deuce McAllister. His 2005 contract was 3250, and he had three years left. Thus, I calculate a cap hit of 1401, and thus a cap hit of 701 for 2006.

So what's changed between your trade to get Duece and now, to make you feel you needed to cut him? Is his rehab not going very well?

Based on my memory, I traded for him after the soft cap period started, so cutting him then or now made no difference. Deuce was included in a trade mostly so help clear cap space from the other team. I was out of contention so I traded one of my 3 running backs then capable of starting, plus a scrub tight end, plus a 3rd round pick, for Todd Heap, a 1st, and taking on Deuce's salary. At the time, I figured I would actually be keeping Deuce going into this year, but looking at my roster situation comparing keeping Deuce to letting him go, I like how my roster looks and my flexibility better by letting him go. As far as I know, he looks to be on schedule, but their addition of Bennett doesn't bode well for the Deuce of old getting 99% of the RB touches. Finally, bottom line is Deuce coming off a knee injury isn't worth a top 5 salary.
