7I. Renegotiation
Okay, so as I am preparing for the 2006 season I started to look at the rules around renegotiation. In looking at the text below it appears that we may need to update the second paragraph. Right now we have no time contraint on renegotiating a trade player. For example I acquired Trent Dilfer last year with a $100/ 1 year deal. The way the rules are written I can now (because he still has a year left on his deal) regotiate with him by paying him $250 in 2005 and 275 for 2006.
I am guessing we want to include language that gives the team that gets the player a fix amount of time to renegotiate. If not a player could be traded with a five year deal and four years down the line the team that acquired him could attempt to use the rules to renegotiate with him. Just throwing it out there... ==== Players with more than one year remaining on their contract can have their contracts renegotiated by the team holding their rights. When a contract is renegotiated, the current year s salary get s a 10% or 300cb raise, whichever is greater, and the contract can be extended up to the standard maximum of five years. A player with less than one year remaining on his contract can only have his contract renegotiated if he is traded to another team. Once traded, the contract can be renegotiated with a raise of 5% or 150cb to the current year salary, whichever is greater. The contract can be extended up to the standard maximum of five years. |
Re: 7I. Renegotiation
I disagree with your reading. The bolded part of your statement starts with "a player with less than one year reamaining on his contract...". The way I see it, if you are currently looking to renegotiate a players contract, you look at their current situation and which category they fall into. A traded player doesn't get to the second category until the last year of their contract, which would then require him to be traded to another team.

Re: 7I. Renegotiation
Actually Matt is more correct Brian. In CDL, we've always played it that any renegotiation off a trade must occur within a reasonable timeframe of the trade (i.e. a few days). We've never allowed a team to carry it out for weeks or months.

Re: 7I. Renegotiation
preds is correct. in cdl the renegotiation is part of the trade basically. has to be in before the next game starts in CDL.

Re: 7I. Renegotiation
I still disagree that the rule as written allows a traded player to be reniged in a following season.
That said, if the intention of the rule is for the reneg to be done as part of the trade, I would obviously conceed that is not written into the rule as is and needs to be updated. |

That being said, any player can be renegotiated (at any time) as long as there are at least 2 years remaining on his contract. However, if he is in the final year of his deal, he can only be renegotiated as part of a trade. |
Re: 7I. Renegotiation
I still think this can be cleared up by saying that a player with only 1 year can be renegotiated if traded but it has to take place within a reasonable period of time (maybe 72 hours from the completion of the trade).

Re: 7I. Renegotiation
BTW, Matt's right. His example says it all. You can sit on a guy for potentially 11 months or something and then, within context of the rules, renegotiate him. That's like a nice year long test run for the guy.

Re: 7I. Renegotiation
I believe this should be 72 hours....that being said I'm looking to see how much longer I have to decide on Deangelo Hall.
