Carson Palmer, #1 QB, 500 cb bonus, new 2006 salary = 1023

Cadillac Williams, #18 RB, 200 cb bonus, new 2006 salary = 750

Re: Unofficial 2006 Rookie Bonuses

Wow, Eli did that well?

At 728 he might never make my active roster again! Top QB's for whatever reason are not paid that much in the Frenzy, and for a QB2 type like Eli, 700+ is too much (IMO at least). Oh well, I'll probably just keep him stashed on my TS and use him 1 week like I did this past season.

Well, if he repeats his #5 overall performance, I would think you might rethink his QB2 status.

Brian,

Final week 17 stats have been updated, so you can update the list as necessary.

Re: Unofficial 2006 Rookie Bonuses

This list is now official. Several players have changed ranking, but only two players' bonuses were affected. Both Donte' Stallworth and Chris Brown dropped out of their respective top 20, and no longer get a bonus. The official bonuses are:

Carson Palmer, #1 QB, 500 cb bonus, new 2006 salary = 1023
Larry Johnson, #2 RB, 450 cb bonus, new 2006 salary = 1089
Eli Manning, #4 QB, 350 cb bonus, new 2006 salary = 728
Larry Fitzgerald, #2 WR, 300 cb bonus, new 2006 salary = 627
Clinton Portis, #6 RB, 300 cb bonus, new 2006 salary maxed at 2000
Stephen Jackson, #10 RB, 300 cb bonus, new 2006 salary = 869
Jeremy Shockey, #2 TE, 200 cb bonus, new 2006 salary = 731
Willis McGahee, #14 RB, 200 cb bonus, new 2006 salary = 1182
Cadillac Williams, #17 RB, 200 cb bonus, new 2006 salary = 750
Julius Jones, #20 RB, 200 cb bonus, new 2006 salary = 793
Ben Roethlisberger, #19 QB, 100 cb bonus, new 2006 salary = 451

Re: Unofficial 2006 Rookie Bonuses

In the SAC’D thread on rookie bonuses, I stated that the problem I see with the Frenzy bonuses are they don’t translate equally to all positions. For instance, with quarterbacks, the top 20 get a bonus, which means definite backup quality QBs get a bonus. However, with wide receivers, the top 20 get a bonuse meaning some definite solid starters do not get a bonus. I thus proposed we should give bonuses to the following top at each position: top 10 QBs, top 20 RBs, top 30 WRs, top 10 tight ends. This would mean that all but a couple players who would be considered starters in our league would receive a bonus at each positions. I propose the following change (first round picks included only, each successive round, the bonus is reduced by 25%).

Current

QBs QBs

#1 500
2-5 350
6-10 200
11-20 100

Proposed
#1 500
#2 400
#3 300
#4 200
#5 150
6-10 100

RBs

#1 600
2-5 450
6-10 300
11-20 200
<O:p</O:p

Proposed
Unchanged

WRs
Current
#1 450
2-5 300
6-10 200
11-20 100

Proposed
#1 450
2-5 300
6-10 250
11-20 150
21-30 100

TEs

#1 225
#2 200
#3 175
#4 150
#5 125
6-10 50

Proposed
Unchanged

This would result in changes to the following 2005 earned bonuses for 2006 salaries:

Eli Manning, finishing as the #4 overall QB, his bonus drops from 350 cbs to 200 cbs, leaving a 2006 salary at 578 versus 728.

Ben Roethlisberger, finishing at the #19 QB, his bonus drops from 100 cbs to 0 cbs, leavening his 2006 salary at 351 versus 451.

Donte Stallworth, finishing at the #21 WR now earns a bonus of 100 leaving his 2006 salary at 510 versus 410.

Antonio Bryant finishing at the #25 WR now earns a bonus of 100 leaving his 2006 salary at 451 instead of 351.

I would propose these changed are not retroactive for previously earned bonuses, and that we change the bonus structure for now and going forward only.

This makes sense. So you're suggesting to start with the above listed bonuses, not NEXT year's bonuses, correct? I'd be fine with that.

Looks good to me.

We still need to fix RFA tenders for QB's, WR's, and possibly TE's.

Where you at with that Brian?

We do? I know we wanted WRs to be higher, what did we want to do with QBs and TEs? I thought they were ok. Which direction did we want them?

oddly, I'm not sure.

For whatever reason, the Frenzy doesn't place a high enough value on TE's, but I think that will change. I expect the TE scale to go up, and think guys like Gates, Gonzo, Shockey, etc should need tenders at 1000 or or so to net a first (I believe it's at 750?).

On the other hand, QB's have been trending downwards, and I think we should lower it a bit.

IMO, QB's and TE's should probably have the same scale, since both are start 12 positions.

As for WR's, the scale definately needs to be higher for the top tier, maybe not so much for the middle tiers.

Definitely agreed WRs need to go up, but I definitely disagree that QBs and TEs should have the same scale just because we both start 12. By that logic, Ks and Defense should be on the same scale.

As far as TEs being undervalued, I have always made that argument. I do think the salaries will be coming up. Witten and Schockey are near or at the end of their rookie contracts. I think Gates' cheap contract is up as well. However, until we see these go up, and to what point they go, I hesitate to adjust. We know WRs are a problem, so we reactionarily adjust them. Until TEs become a problem, I don't think we need to adjust.

I remember the Swords and I have a brief conversation on the theory behind RFA tender levels, and the relationship to an overvalued and undervalued position. Do you set the RFA tender level at the "real" value (say determined by VBD) or at the market level?

Right now, with each position (assuming an upward adjustments with WRs), there are only a handful of players that have salaries above the 1st round tender level, yet those salaries are significantly above that level. If there were free market forces for all tight ends, I would think maybe 5 tops go above our current 750 top level, and the rest falling quickly below that level, yet there is only 1 above that level currently.

Look at RBs. Do we think we have that level correct? There are only 4 RBs over the top tender level currently, but the following players are on their rookie contract and I would think would make more than the 2000 top level: Portis, Larry Johnson, McGahee, KJones (well, maybe not anymore), Julius Jones, Stephen Jackson, Cadillac. If you think there is not enough money for all these guys to take big salaries, I simply point to Tony Fisher's 1050 cb salary. There is plenty of free money in the league.

Bottom line, TEs aren't a problem yet, and I hesitate to tick them up until it is. The best tight ends are deserving of 1st round compensation, but I don't think tight ends should be the exception where you should have to tag them at a price not yet supported in the market. No one would hesitate to spend 1200 on the hands down best QB in the league, 2000 for the hands down best RB, 1800 for the best WR, why should a Gates owner have to take a risk at tagging him at a price not yet paid in the Frenzy by anyone other than myself in the history of the league (as far as I know)?

Fair enough.. I retract. Use your barometer of 3-4 players above the tenders (where possible)., and we can re-address positions in the future (like we are with the WR's) if needed.

Re: Unofficial 2006 Rookie Bonuses

Just wondering... if you're talking about changing the bonus based on defition of starter, doesnt it make more sense to do it in multiple sof 12?

Top 12 QBs
Top 24 RBs
Top 36 WRs
Top 12 TEs

Seems more logical to me than just sticking to multiples of 10.

Only for the simple reason that doing what you propose involves restructuring every position, instead of just bringing two of the four in line with the other two. I have no problem doing that, but my "starter" reference was more for comparative purposes. It just seemed silly to give a bonus for a benchriding QB when a starting receiver went without. Again though, I have no problem reworking the whole thing. Until the rookie draft talk heats up, I'm looking for something to tinker with. :)

Re: Unofficial 2006 Rookie Bonuses

I could live with the QB, RB, and TE bonus as those are just 2 or 4 off from the multiples of 12.

However I'd like to see the WRs expanded to 30 or 36 as for the most part we are basing the other positions on starters and WRs should be no different. 12 teams start 3 WRs. As we can also see the market for WRs was pretty active last year for the few WRs that were on the market and fielding decent WRs seemed tougher.

If we are going to the full top 36 for WRs, we might as well make it universal. I re-work all the scales for 12-24-36-12 and we can see if we like that.

I'm cool with 10 20 30 10 or 12 24 36 12

either works for me, though the bonus scale for QB's and TE's should drop quickly IMO

Im with preds... 10-20-30-12 or 12-24-36-12 works for me.

I just thought it didn't make sense for WRs to be the same number as RBs when every team starts 2 vs 3.

Yep, missed him. He is still #9, and as a 2nd rounder would be in line for a 38cb raise at the moment. That would jump up to 75 if he finishes between 5th and 8th, FTR.
