Re: 2005 Rules Discussion

Got another one for discussion (this was discussed a bit a while back):

This is rule 6B:
Quote:

Each team will be allowed a 5 player development squad for players with 0-3 years of NFL experience (Players entering their 4th NFL season are NOT eligible for the DS). There is no Cyber Buck cap to the Development Squad, but there is a 20 year contract cap. Development squad cyberbuck and contract year caps will not count against a team's regular cap unless a player is activated to the active roster.

An Active roster player can NEVER be placed on the DS. The only way to place a player on the DS is to acquire them by trade or rookie draft.

Once promoted to the Active Roster, a player cannot be placed back on the Development Squad by the SAME team during the same season (if the player is traded other teams can place the player on their Development Squad, but the original team CANNOT have on his development squad that year).
I am wondering if this is the clarified version. This still seems confusing because the second paragraph seems to contradict the third. For example, if I trade Charles Rogers to another team, can they put him on their DS (he still has one DS year left)? To my reading the second paragraph says NEVER but the third would seem to allow it.

Anybody care to weigh in?

I don't think this is updated language. I think given the changes we made, the second paragraph is correct, and the third really could be striken (or at least needs to be drastically re-written.

Uh, I would prefer we strike the second and go with the third since I think this is how we originally discussed it. I know there were issues with the trades back to the original team but I think the owners here are pretty honest would not try and put one over on the others. However, it would allow some players that might have been activated early to hold additional value to teams with DS space.

I think the 3rd paragraph is trying to say (poorly I might add) that if player X was traded from Team A's Active Squad and placed on Team B's DS, that should Team A reaquire Player X at some later date he could not laterally move to Team A's DS, but would instead have to be placed on the active roster (not so sure any of what I just wrote makes sense!) :wallbang

That did make sense, and I think you're right looking back now.

Okay that was how I remembered it. In that case it seems like the never should be modified in paragraph 2.

Proposed change to Rule 6B:

Each team will be allowed a 5 player development squad for players with 0-3 years of NFL experience (Players entering their 4th NFL season are NOT eligible for the DS). There is no Cyber Buck cap to the Development Squad, but there is a 20 year contract cap. Development squad cyberbuck and contract year caps will not count against a team's regular cap unless a player is activated to the active roster.

Only drafted rookies are eligible to be placed on the DS. Once a player is activated by a team he can NEVER again appear on that teams’ developmental squad. However, a player may be traded to another team who could place the player on their DS as long as he still had DS eligibility as outlined above.

At first glance, that appears to be a good fix.

Agreed, that language is much clearer.
