PASSES 9-3 - Add Franchise Designation (in line with SACD rules)
Patrick has brought up adding a Franchise designation to Frenzy. Rules from SACD would apply:
Once a players contract ends, they become a free agent; however, teams are allowed to designate up to 1 player as a Franchise Player per season. Once a team designates a Franchise Player, that player is considered part of their active roster and the tendered salary counts against the team's cap. The Franchised player will receive a 1 year contract at a salary that is the average of the top 5 players at the franchised player's position from the previous year, or a 20% salary increase, whichever is greater. The franchised player's salary will count against the team's cap, starting May 1st. A player may only be Franchised once by a specific owner. Players acquired during playoffs cannot be declared as a franchise player the following season. The earliest a player could be Franchised tagged will be at the end of the 2021 season (prior to the start of the 2022 season). |
Re: Poll - Add Franchise Designation (in line with SACD rules)
Said no for now. However, if we add renegotiations like we have in SAC'd then I would say let's add all the same contract options including this one.

This part of the rule only applies while the player is continuously active with the team. But once released in any form, the player would again be eligible if reacquired? |

I interpret that to mean that no team can Franchise the same player more than once (regardless of being on a different contract or not). For example, say I Franchised Josh Allen and he plays through his Franchise tag. I cannot Franchise him a second time, however, another team could pick him up, and Franchise tag him one time when his contract expires. And then a subsequent team could do the same. Wash / rinse / repeat theoretically until he's been Franchised no more than once by every team in the league. What is clear in my opinion is that no team can ever franchise the same player more than once. I didn't write this language (unless I wrote it when we founded the league way back when). I copy/pasted what Pat had written in the discussion and added the 1 year contract part that he later clarified Hopefully one of the SACD longtimers can comment on the inner workings of the rule and whether my interpretation is correct. |

Mike, you are correct.

Re: Poll - Add Franchise Designation (in line with SACD rules)
I would think that once a player's contract is expired or voided and the player is reacquired under a new contract, the clock would start over.
If Franchised, then he would not be eligible the following season. It seems that this would be hard to track. If player is in the NFL for 15+ years, a team might have him under a few different contracts. I might Franchise tag him in his 5th year, then try it again in his 13th year. I can barely remember what I had last night for dinner, so there is a good chance I won't remember Franchising tagging a player several years ago #Ummm . Who will track this? |
Re: Poll - Add Franchise Designation (in line with SACD rules)
It doesn't happen very often so it is pretty easy to track.
Here is a link to SAC'D tags so you can see: http://predsff.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=100 |
Re: Poll - Add Franchise Designation (in line with SACD rules)
I see that tracking would be easy enough. A separate folder for the threads.
However, still not sure of this part of the rule. I understand the intent being to prevent an NFL player from being locked up by a Frenzy owner indefinitely. (I see in SAC'D where JJ Watts was tagged by the same team for 4 years - I assume that is why this part was added) But if the rule were that the tag could only be used once on a given contract, then that intent would be fulfilled. The player would go to the open market (RFA or UFA) the following year and his market price would be set. The 20% increase on the next tag would make it difficult to tag him again. But even if he was tagged again, he would go out to the open market again the year after.. However, I agree that for Frenzy, the tag probably won't be used much, so not really a sticky point. I just thought the rule as written was a little limiting - beyond what I assume the intent was... |

Still need a vote from Bees to close this out.

Re: Poll - Add Franchise Designation (in line with SACD rules)
This was started prior to season rollover.. Do we get to franchise anyone this year, or too much of a mess to now?
