Question regarding the Soft Cap
Question regarding the Soft Cap
Today (April30) is the final day of the soft cap period. If I drop a play today, ½ of the Cap hit impacts this season and ½ hits next season. My question is… What season are we in at the current date? Will a player dropped today hit the 2018 and 2019 season or the 2019 and 2020 season? Also what Salary and contract year is used? Example: If I drop Crowell today (before deadline): His 2018 Salary is $1,018 (2 years on contract) His 2019 Salary is $1,120 (1 yr on contract) If he is dropped as of the 2018 season his CAP hit would be ($1,018*0.2) + ($1,120 * 0.1) = $316 SOFT CAP hit: 2018: $158 / 2019: $158 / 2020: $0 If he is dropped as of the 2019 season his CAP his would be ($1,120 * 0.2) = $224 SOFT CAP hit: 2019: $112 / 2020: $112 Planning on dropping him, just wanted to understand the impact on the salary cap if I drop him today. |
Re: Question regarding the Soft Cap
Today is the last day of the 2018 season. The 2019 season begins at midnight.
A cut today would be based on the 2018 contract years and CB amount. 50% of the penalty would go against the 2018 cap (which disappears at midnight) and the other 50% will count towards your 2019 cap. |
Re: Question regarding the Soft Cap
I’ll add there is no reason to cut guys with 1 year contractS as they fall off your roster at midnight unless tagged as RFAs.

Re: Question regarding the Soft Cap
Also to add, we have a Hard Cap that begins May 1 at midnight as well. The Hard Cap runs from May 1 through October 31. During this time, the full penalty counts against the current season (which will be 2019 season beginning at midnight). On November 1st of each season we transition to the Soft Cap which splits the cap penalty against the current season and the next season. The Soft Cap Period runs from November 1 through April 30 each year.
In your example above, if you were to wait to cut Crowell until after midnight tonight, the full 224 cb penalty would count against your 2019 cap. If you cut him before midnight, only 158 will count against your 2019 cap. |
