Playoff tie-breaker???

According to the rules a home playoff team gets free additional points awarded based on having a higher seed. Fine. Now if a tie occurs, this home team gets given the win? This seems counter-intuitive to me since the home team was already given a points advantage. How about consider "giving" the visiting team the win since the home team didn't score enough points to win the game outright with additional advantage. I could understand "giving" the home team the win in a playoff tie IF they didn't already have some sort of additional advantage. The way I see it the visiting team worked their tail off to overcome the bonus points AND the other team. The visitors fought harder for the tie than the home team.

I understand ties are fairly rare with the scoring structure. Regardless of this fact - there is a rule about playoff ties that doesn't quite jive, in my opinion.

Thoughts?

Good point. It's actually NEVER happened before, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't re-examine it. I think there are two more feasible options:
1) Coin toss...
2) Visiting team get the win (since they didn't get the bonus points)...

I think the rule might have been made before we added the "home field advantage" points... so this is worth looking at.

Others?

I hate home field advantage, so I would agree with Chuck, give the win to visitors.

Although I don't think in all the years I have been playing in SAC'd and Frenzy, I have ever seen a tie...

Mr Opihi,
I am not sure I agree with a coin toss to determine a playoff game. That is a bit too random for my taste. I am glad to see this possibly going to a vote. Speaking of hating home field advantage....why 7 points? The NFL (which this league is based off of) seems to give a 3 point advantage to home teams....granted this usually comes through the Vegas folks....Can anyone justify the use of 7???? Just curious especially since Burt hates it.....of course that may mean it stays forever....but still....THANKS a bunch guys for allowing me in the league and also to be able to chime in now and again....

Re: Playoff tie-breaker???

First of all, thank you for the formality in calling me "Mr. Opihi". Feel free to keep it up... or you can call me Jim, either way.

Now... about the issue. A coin toss was already in the rules, that's why I suggested that. What else would you suggest? Bench points? (I think with a cap league like ours, some folks put their "eggs" in the starters basket, while others go for the "deep bench" basket. Using bench points would penalize the "starters basket" folks) Highest score from a starting player? (We've been victims to a team that rode the "hot hand" of a single player who gets a crazy fantasy score, vs. having a team that plays consistently well across the board from multiple starters) Highlighting ONE position (ie. Highest scoring QB or TE or K or D/ST, etc. wins? Which position gets the "tie breaker status?") Other option? To me, a coin toss is about as fair as it gets.

7-point advantage... When the rule first came into effect, the goal was to reward those who excelled in the regular season. Don't like being the visitor in the playoffs? Then secure home field advantage. Just like in the NFL, some teams are very good, but just can't seem to get over the hump when playing in, oh... let's say, SEATTLE?!? A touchdown was seen by the rules committee as being a legitimate and formidable 'home field advantage'. Just as very few playoff games (ie. NONE) have ever ended in a tie... believe it or not, very few playoff teams have ever LOST become of the home field advantage. Personally, I think it's a fun way to reward the teams that perform consistently better over the long haul of a fantasy season.

BUT... in this league, EVERYTHING can be up for debate/vote... if there's enough interest.

Re: Playoff tie-breaker???

Thank you for answering my question in depth. Coin tosses are indeed a viable option and usually the last option. Copy. A TD advantage for home teams is interesting. I understand the logic. I may not agree with it, but that is my problem. I agree with the premise of playing better to get home field as well. I say it in poker all the time...don't like losing...play better...I look forward to the discussion if it continues with enough interest. I understand this may be a moot point based on the fact that ties are rare in our scoring format...

Ties are rare.
But anyone can choose to bring a rule change up for vote.
No hard feelings either way.

Chuck, like Jim stated, anyone can put a rule change up for vote anytime. I brought this to a vote a few years back, and it was barely defeated. We have several new owners now, so might have a shot:
