Larger cap penalty for multiple years left?
This is something I've been thinking about for a while. I'm not sure if I ever brought it up. I've always thought that if we cut a player with multiple years left on their contract, that the team should take a larger cap hit. Similar to an NFL team eating the remaing prorated portion of a signing bonus if that team cuts someone with multiple years left on the contract.
Here's how it could work Randy Moss signed at 100 cbs for 3 years year 1 salary 100 year 2 salary 110 year 3 salary 121 If he's cut in year 1 the team would take 20% of his year 1 salary and 5 percent of each remaining year. That would be an additional 12 cbs. (110 + 121)*5% = 11.55 (round up). So the total cap hit for Moss would be 32 cbs. Of course this is just an example. We could adjust the numbers to whatever everyone thinks is fair. I always thought that cutting a player with multiple years left on their contracts should cause a larger cap hit. We can discuss this and vote on it for next season. |
I was thinking about this as well but I don't know if it would work.
We really can't gauge how big of a cap hit we would need until ALL of the First Year Frenzy contracts have expired. Because as I see it a lot of the contracts are inflated because of the extra cap space created by the cheaper slararies. Another thing is the current cap system I think is fine. Adding cap hits for years left would only make things more compliacted. While this is a good idea and would foster more thinking in cap year assignments, which should lead to more player movement I don't know if it's worth it. The biggest place affected by this type of cap hit would be players on their rookie contracts. More often than not owners will sign rookies ot max deals.... the problem is I can now see where owners are coming from saying the rookie scale needs to be restructured. It is definatley a bit high. This is a great idea but I think there are certain things taht need to be fixed until we can implement something like this. |
I've noticed this too... no real suggestions... I've just seen it as a "loophole" when we dump a player with multiple years left on his contract. Might be something we look into in the future...
