Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents - PASSES ("Yes!")

Basically, this would eliminate a hard and fast ending of FA periods. If a players has been started, then his bidding will finish naturally, rather than at midnight. Thus someone put up for bid at 11:59pm, won't be on a one minute clock.

So those being bid on during Off-season period, the clock would just adjust from the 48-hour off-season to the 24-hour in-season. End of In-Season would just continue with 24-hour clock until bid is won.

Simple Yes or No vote...eliminate the hard stop, or keep it.

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

How will we handle the dreaded "keep away" tactic that will undoubtedly happen? Opposing teams could simply bid on a player anytime Saturday during the playoffs, and the team that may actually need the aforementioned player has no recourse for acquiring. You can say, "Bid it up earlier in the week!" But it's really easy to use the 24 hour clock to your advantage (as an opposing owner) and basically screw up another person's valid attempts.

If you can address this... I'd be happy to vote for eliminating eBay style bidding.

Blind bidding on the last day maybe? Let's say the last day is a Saturday. On that Saturday, everybody interested has to send his maximum bid in a PM to the Commissioner. The Commissioner himself (if interested) has to send his bid to a pre-designated owner (someone without stake in the bidding) on the previous day (Friday).

I don't see its been an issue in SAC'd...it would be no different than the playoff teams playing the same tactic. In fact, this keeps the playoff teams involved in the bidding of all players....

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

LOVE the idea of blind bidding!
I understand the tactics of our bidding format during the regular season... and I'm totally okay with that. But on a short playoff week, I feel the "spirit of the rules" (allowing every team a fair chance to bid on players) could easily be manipulated to keep an opponent away from securing a much-needed player. I hate that. Passionately. Blind bidding would eliminate that concern. If bidding runs into Saturday, then all teams bidding on a certain player send their "max bid" in to the commish (and commish, if needed, sends bid to another owner). Works like a charm!

Not sure what you mean Jim..this doesn't extend the ability for non-playoff teams to begin bidding on new players..only those players put up for bid before the end of InSeason or Pre-Season UFA bidding will continue until won in normal fashion...I guess it would extend to RFA bidding also, I don't recall what we did back then.

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

I understand that only playoff teams can bid on postseason players.
I was talking specifically about PLAYOFF free agency.
I'm fine with no eBay style bidding EVERYTIME ELSE (preseason RFA & in-season free agency)... just NOT playoff free agency.

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

I still am not getting your point....how does this rule even affect Playoff FA period? Once playoffs end, who is still going to continue to bid on players? Does the playoff FA period end sometime before championship game? I guess I need to re-read the rules...

I think Jim means the period from in-season FA to post-season FA.

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

ah...ok, I get yah now....

I still don't see it as being a big deal myself...but I do not have a problem with stopping the vote, and adding something specific to the ending of In Season FA period...makes sense...either a blind bid for those started prior to the end, or maybe stating if started by playoff team, then only playoff teams can continue bidding? and that player is then restricted to one year deal?

Just from this years example, I would have liked to have the opportunity to keep the bidding for Caddy going, since at the time, it appeared he was going to have an impact in the next weeks games.....

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

There are two points here.
First, is the transition from in-season free agency to post-season free agency.
The second is each week during playoffs. The bidding HAS to end on the Saturday during the playoffs so a team can get a player, rather than have another team postpone the selling of a player until AFTER that weekend's games.
Make sense yet? lol

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

OK..I get it now....In SAC'd, I guess we still end Post Season FA bidding each week of playoffs at a set day/time....just the end of In Season FA...maybe we should set it back a week, to let it play out naturally?

I still don't see that it will become a big issue....

As long as teams that are not playoff eligible can still bid on the in-season RFA players during the first week of playoffs, I'd be fine with that!

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

Here's what I'm trying to avoid:

SCENARIO 1... end of in-season bidding (last week of the Frenzy regular season).
The Opihi have not qualified for the playoffs, but the Chunks have. Both are bidding on hot-shot Lions kicker, Dave Rayner... hoping to lock him into a multi-year deal before the playoffs. The Opihi have the leading bid, and Rayner will sell to him by 1:43pm on Saturday. The Chunks, however, wait until 12:01am to bid up Rayner. With eBay style bidding no longer allowed in the Frenzy, this is a brilliant move, as the Opihi will NOT be able to bid on Rayner next week, since Rayner will not be "clear" to acquire until the 24-hour clock expires... and next week, being out of the playoffs, they're not eligible.

SCENARIO 2... playoff free agency
The Chunks & Opihi are pitted against each other in the opening round of the 2011 Frenzy playoffs. The Opihi have a solid roster, and don't really need any more players for the postseason. The Chunks, however, are short on healthy RBs. They need to pick up an RB2 for this week's game. They bid on up-n-coming Miami star, Patrick Cobbs, who's expected to start this week's game for the Phins. The Opihi, just being nasty, keep bidding him up throughout the week. On Friday, the Chunks increase their bid by a lot, in an effort to secure Cobbs' services for the weekend. At 12:04am on Saturday, the Opihi bid him up, thereby rendering it impossible for Cobbs to clear the 24-hour waiver period by the midnight EST sale deadline. Thus, the Chunks get screwed. Sure, the Opihi will be on the hook for Cobbs' salary on Tuesday when he clears waivers... but the mission was accomplished in the dreadful game of "Frenzy keep away."

Make any better sense now?

So the point I was making here... per scenario one above... is that if we extend the in-season deadline to the weekend of the first week of the playoffs (should any players not sell by midnight EST the prior Saturday), then all Frenzy owners should be eligible to bid on THOSE PLAYERS WHO EXTENDED, even if they're not eligible for post-season bidding.

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

How is that any different than the way it is now? I mean by allowing dastardly play...I understand the difference in how the rules would work. Right now, you could just wait until 1 minute before midnight, and either bump an active bid, to claim the player in last minute, or simply bid on multiple players who may be targeted by playoff teams, at 1 minute before midnight at end of in-season FA?

I guess there can be shady dealings either way....

Royal Hawaiian Opihi December 31st, 2010 06:55 PM

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

Correct. But if I'm a guy who needs a player desperately, I'm waiting until close to midnight, then putting in a solid bid. If my opponent bids him up a few seconds later, so be it. He'll have to arrange his roster accordingly. At least there's closure.

SO... I like the idea of a BLIND BID submitted by all teams who have bid on a player that moves into Saturday. That will accomplish the need to end all bids on Saturday. This is for playoffs only.

If we extend the end of the in-season FA by a week, that's fine. All teams then can continue to bid on any actively-bid-upon players.

I'd vote for both of those options!

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

I like it if a team who is going to be out of the playoffs, and is planning for next year, should be allowed to bid on a player who was bid before the playoff week starts.
this is in effect your last chance to even bid on a player planing for next year, other wise your done and no need to be active that week. I dont see a harm in a team being able to bid on a player who was put up for auction before the final regular season game.

Those would be two very good options for sure...Since it looks like this poll should pass, how about a 2nd poll to decide how to better define the ending of the bidding...and make those 2 options to vote on? Blind bidding could be a fun new option to add...

Burt... can you post that? Thanks!

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

OK...looks like this passes

I see we have 3 options for In Season FA bidding:

1) Leave it as passed, date will remain the same, any active bids prior to end date will remain active until bid is won via normal clock rules

2) Move the end date to Week 13, and any active bids prior to end date will remain active until bid is won via normal clock rules to allow for end of bidding prior to start of playoffs

3) Leave end date as is, and any active bids, all teams will be allowed to submit a blind bid to the commish

Is this it?

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

I think option two is leave the date as is... but if any players are still active on that Saturday deadline, those players can have up to another week to finish bidding. If we simply move the deadline back another week we'll have the same issue... what to do if players aren't completely sold by the 11:59pm Saturday.

Burt the Butcher January 2nd, 2011 04:26 PM

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

This poll was to eliminate eBay style bidding, i.e. there is no hard stop date to end a players bidding war...it just plays out normal...the hard date is now just for putting up new players...

So, option 2 is to allow an extra week to finish up these last players put up for bidding, to hopefully get them resolved before playoff bidding starts....so no, we won't have same issue we had at 11:59pm, as this poll eliminates that issue.

#1 would leave the end date for new bids as is, and allow the already active bids to play out...

Royal Hawaiian Opihi January 6th, 2011 09:51 PM

Re: Eliminate eBay style bidding on Free Agents

Passes. Even if the final 4 teams who haven't voted vote against it, the 7 votes is enough to pass with a majority.

Now... I believe we need to spell out how we're going to move forward with this new system?
