I don't think we can trade 2009 picks until April 1st.

I was trying to clarify this before but here are the rules. I'm taking them from the rules link so the years are off.

Teams will be allowed to trade future draft picks up to 1 season in advance, therefore you can trade picks for the 2006 season in 2005, however, you could not trade picks for the 2007 season.

11C. Season Timeline (Key Dates for the 2005 season):

Here are the key dates for everyone to keep in mind:

Thursday March 24th at 11:59pm - 2005 RFA Declarations are Due

Thursday March 31st at 11:59pm - 2004 Soft Cap Period Ends

Friday April 1st at 12:00am - 2005 Hard Cap Period Begins

Friday April 1st at 12:00am - 2005 RFA Bidding Opens

Saturday April 30th at 11:59pm - 2005 RFA Bidding Closes

So the 2005 Frenzy year started on April 1st. Or in that case EVERY new Frenzy year starts on April 1st.

I think I'm reading this correctly.

If that is the case (that we can't trade say 2009 picks until April 1st 2008) I would like to possibly change that rule. I think say after March 1st 2008, trading of 2009 picks should be allowed to help with RFA trades. It just opens up more trade resources and owner interaction.

Thoughts?

The year starts April 1 every year, that is a static date.

The restriction is because we don't want teams to mortgage their future so much for one year, devestate their team, then walk away. I would be adamantly opposed to loosening any restrictions of trading future picks.

http://www.predsff.com/forums/images...n-GoodPost.gif I guess I didn't think of the walking away part, good point... I was more or less thinking of the March to April 1st trading period. The reason being I don't see much difference of the RFA trading period (March - April) and the trading of future picks during the actual draft.

I just think that loosening this up in anyway creates more of an opportunity for some teams to focus too much on this year, foregetting the future, and too much opportunity for some teams to forget this year and play just for the future. I like the balance we have where any team has a chance in March to be playing in the Frenzy Bowl. I hesitate to tweak that without good reason, and to me, moving more potential RFA's before the season is not a good reason. Someone would have to convince me of a good reason to do that.

Re: Discussion: Changing the New year date?

I guess from my experience, which has only been 2 years of March time, the trading that happens usually only involves the next year's 3rd or 4th round picks. Therefore there seems to be "seperate" trades that execute on April 1st to adhere to the next year's picks rule. That's fine by me if the date doesn't change but I expect to see some extension trades of trades that have happened before April 1st.

I guess I still don't see the difference in trading a 2009 pick in March of 2008 or in April of 2008. That was the whole point I was trying to discuss and I don't think I stated it correctly before.

I'm happy with it the way it is, for the reasons stated above.

There's probably not much difference between trading a 2009 pick in March 2008 or April 2008. But where do you extend it? Do you set up some arbitrary date in March that you can start trading 2009 picks? To me, a big justification for not trading them until one year prior is that if it is April 1, then all 12 teams have actively decided their RFAs for the year, and they are sure to be back. The further back we extend the ability to trade future picks, the closer you get to a point for a team not to come back. Personally, I'd like to not have to worry about this, but since we've had new teams each of the past several years, including a founding team and another that just decided to never come back without a word to anyone, it is a reality we have to deal with.

Yeah the more I think about it I am agreeing with you more and more.

That's the good thing about discussions :)
