Re: L. Coles to Popes
Avengers are in Vegas for the weekend (lucky duck), so I'll speak to it.
1. All I'm acquiring is the right to match (he's on an expiring contract). Generally, that's not worth much more than a 3rd/4th. 2. I seem to be the only team in the league with the lack of RFA-able players and the cap space to take on an RFA tag. Absolut is the only other team without a clear 3rd tag, but he's got no cap space. 3. He'll get nothing for him three weeks from now when his contract expires. Seems like a pretty standard deal to me. I can't wait to see what Avengers do with their six (yes, SIX!) 3rd/4th round picks! |
Re: L. Coles to Popes
2 things here,
1) I think Opihi was saying a 4th because now you (Jason) have no 4th round picks and therefore cannot designate to the development squad without the 4th round pick. 2) Avengers will have to deal those with the limited TS space or just draft in quanity to hope 1 is quality. |
Re: L. Coles to Popes
Ahh, maybe you're right. Well, regarding my practice squad, when all is said and done, I'm sure I'll end with a 4th before the 4th round hits, whether via comp pick or trade. Plus, I still like all 3 guys I have there, so I'm not sure I want to boot one of them anyway.

Re: L. Coles to Popes
Damn, I really, really hate this rule, but this trade has to be reversed, because I was over my years cap by one year and didn't notice it w/in 24 hours. I didn't realize it until I completed my trade with Amish last night.
By the rules (which we will be discussing changing very soon), the trade is reversed and I take a 20% penalty. On a Coles salary of $787, that's $158. It is unclear to me if that's all on 2007, or half on 2007 and half on 2008. The rules don't say. On the one hand, you could argue it's just like a penalty for cutting players, and those are split 50-50 during the off-season (soft cap until March 31). On the other hand, the point of the soft cap for cut players is so that people can't dump them late scot-free in 2007 before 2008 kicks in. The rules only speak of cut players when talking about the soft cap. I'd argue that it's not like I'm getting some sort of benefit (as you do when dumping a guy early if the whole penalty is on the current year); it's a pure penalty w/ no benefit to me, so it should all go on 2007, the year I'm being penalized for. I guess Brian and Jim will have to decide. This sucks. My apologies to the Avengers. We can re-execute on Monday if you want. I will now probably have to make additional cuts to make room after the penalty is applied in order for us to trade again. Sometimes I wonder if this league is too complicated for its own good :( I have a lot of thoughts on this rule. Check out the discussion thread: http://www.predsff.com/forums/showthread.php?p=62259 |
Re: TRADE REVERSED DUE TO POPES EXCEEDING CAP - L. Coles to Popes
This rule has to stay in place in order to prevent late year salary dumps. The problem is however... we haven't really determines when trading could/should begin after the deadline and what year it accounts for.
I'm ok with keep it split between 2007/2008 b/c any team right now can cut players as save half of the cap hit. A little loop hole... sure, but one that everyone has been usin for years to save cap. Just like how NFL teams have certain dates before they have to award bonuses and such... the period before the OFFICIAL start of FA is our little cap saving date. |

During the season, the penalty is assessed to that year's cap. Speaking off the top of my head (without looking at the rules), I'd say that since we're technically not in the 2008 season yet (I'm guessing that starts with the RFA period), I'd be in favor of making the cap hit 100% into the 2007 roster (unless the salary increases for 2008 have already kicked in, in which case I'd say go with the split).

Re: TRADE REVERSED DUE TO POPES EXCEEDING CAP - L. Coles to Popes
It looks like we've split it 50-50 between years in the past. See Mutts attempt to acquire A. Peterson (Chi) last year: http://www.predsff.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11674 - post #19.
Brian, looking at that Mutts transaction, can you tell me where the penalties show up on the roster app? I see the $23 for each year, but where does the $28 per year show up? It seems to appear under Roscoe Parrish, but then where's his penalty? That said, go ahead and assess the $158 half-and-half. Wow, trying to do a minor 4th-for-an-RFA trade will cost me $79 for all of 2008. I really screwed myself for nothing. Jim, I'll be checking with you to make sure I have my #s all straight. |
Re: TRADE REVERSED DUE TO POPES EXCEEDING CAP - L. Coles to Popes
It doesn't appear the roster penalty got added in. I've added it in so the remaining cap hit will take affect.
