Love 'em. When I 1st contacted Brett it was about just trading Westy, however he needed a QB and McNabb was the only one I would part with. So it just works out that way.

After the intial part of the trade (Westbrook, Driver, and Buckhalter to him and sending Smith and Jacobs my way) I have him at 365 under the cap including the RFA retained Fred Taylor at 2000cb and RFA acquired Jason Taylor at 650, with RFAs Glenn and Peppers (in play) still on his roster.

Sorry Mike! No Steve Smith for you....... again.

When reneging players involved in a trade, if I am reading the rules correctly, you must declare the contract years immediatly. Only FA's and rookie contract declarations are held off until August. So unless Mike says it has been handled differently in the past, I am going to have to say that all players involved in the trade who's years weren't renegged immediatly, will have to remain as is.

"The deadline for the announcement of the length of the contracts of players picked up in free agency or the rookie draft will be August 30th (the day after (Tuesday) the 3rd preseason game for most teams) each year by midnight (the night before the start of the In-Season Free Agency period which begins on August 31 each NFL season). No player can be traded unless his contract years are declared BEFORE the trade is announced."

While nothing is officially in the rules per se on reneg timelines, the rule of thumb we've followed is in SACD has been that the reneg's must occur within a reasonable time frame, i.e. within a couple days of the trade. It's WAY too late to reneg those players now.

FWIW, this was brought up last year (or the year before) I believe, and we relied back on how we handled it in the old CDL days, and that was what I stated above, "a reasonable timeframe, i.e. a couple days"

The reneg rule is one that came over from CDL, thus it made sense to apply the CDL handling of it in the absence of a clearcut rule.

On all trades I recall where players were renegged, they were either done in the players confimation of deal, or with a seperate post, that was posted right after both confirmed. We can be reasonable and give 48 hours, but traded vets don't fall into same category as FA's signed and rookies drafted and wait months to do it.

I am not going to make a stink about this... But, I looked at the rules when this trade was made and found nothing about a time limit to reneg.. Thus, figured I had till the end of the 3rd week of preseason. I checked in both frenzy and SAC'D rules.

I don't remember any conversations about the subject in the past... But, that was probably because I was not involved.. I think when a problem like this comes up, and a decision is made, something should be written about it in the rules to take care of future ???

I would like to know where you found this... Or do you just make up shit as you go along.. The rules below are all I could find.

7I. Renegotiation

Players with more than one year remaining on their contract can have their contracts renegotiated by the team holding their rights. When a contract is renegotiated, the current years salary gets a 10% or 300cb raise, whichever is greater, and the contract can be extended up to the standard maximum of five years.

A player with less than one year remaining on his contract can only have his contract renegotiated if he is traded to another team. Once traded, the contract can be renegotiated with a raise of 5% or 150cb to the current year salary, whichever is greater. The contract can be extended up to the standard maximum of five years.

7J. Announcing Contracts

This section that you posted is where I am making shit up as I go along. It clearly states that FA's and Rookies have until August 30th to announce their contracts, not players already with a contract. The last line states "NO player can be traded unless his contract years are declared BEFORE the trade is announced." Thus looking back on a few trades I could find where the contract was renegged, it was always done with the trade announcment, or in a seperate post made at the same time. And as Preds stated earlier, while it may not be clear (we'll get that remedied), that is the intended nature of the rule; which makes sense, in that you have to declare all renegotiations of one year players before the Hard Cap period, so it makes sense that traded players need to be renegged immediatly at time of trade.

To be fair then, since this is really the first time this has come up, and since you look bigger and meaner than me (friggin Raider fan!!!), I'll give you 48 hours to reneg the players that had contracts already coming your way. And once again, this is a one time pass for the league. And the rule can be made clearer, stating that an owner receiving a player traded with an existing contract, has 48 hours after time of announced trade to post renegged contracts.

Fair enough?

To be clear, the language you are looking at that talks about how years must be declared prior to a trade is a copy from the Frenzy and does not apply to renegotiations. What that is talking about is drafted rookies and signed free agents. When you trade those players, you have to declare the years before the trade (usually, it just happens at the time of the trade), but this was not intended to address renegotiations since we don't have renegotiations in the Frenzy.

I think it would be fair to say the rules do not actually address the timeframe, so the one time pass here is reasonable.

Yep, it's unclear for sure. Since today is a holiday in the US, and Brett is probably hammered by now, I suppose he can have until Monday to declare renegs.
