"Home Field Advantage" - ?!?!?
 

Just read the rules and saw this



WHAT THE HECK? So because I am going to be the wild card team I will start the game 7 points in the hole? WHAT THE HECK? Who came up with this crap?

There is a very realistic chance that I will be tied for the best record in the league (with Rami) and also be the highest point scorer in the league. As a reward for this I will start the game with -7 points. Sounds like a good system.

Don't give me the Frenzy league BS.

My bad for missing this earlier, but there is no way in hell I will be playing in this league next year if this rule doesn't change in the off season. This is a ridiculous way to punish teams. If you are worried about TIES there are hundreds of ways that would be better than this.

In the Frenzy, I'm in your exact same shoes. Highest scoring team, 2nd best record, :Bla.

Thems the breaks. It's an edge to the higher seeds. They earned it by winning more than you. They get the edge to make the lower seeds truly earn a bowl berth, and reduce the chance of a fluke team winning it all over a team that was better for most of the season. If you're good enough, you'll overcome it.

If you think 7 points is bad, you should see my local league, the higher seeds get a 10pt edge in the 1st 2 rounds, with essentially the same scoring system.

What "benefit" is gained by this idiotic rule? I can see none.

With only 4 teams making the playoffs there is no question of an undeserving team getting there. And frankly, if you think that is the case, then maybe you want to just have the top 2 teams make the playoffs because the other two are "undeserving" to be there.

I just cannot comprehend how someone logically came to the conclusion that this was a good idea?

Someone help me out here.

The Frenzy had 6 playoff teams out of 12 originally, that was there somewhat to counteract that, but also to mimic reality in the NFL where playing at home in the playoffs is a definate edge (just ask Vegas). We cut the playoffs down to 4 teams in the Frenzy a couple years in, but never looked back at the HF edge, nor felt the need to.

Regardless, it's the playoffs. Think of the advantage an NFL team has at home in the playoffs. As the lower seed you're in effect going to their house. They have an edge. You need to overcome it.

In the regular season they say homefield edge is worth 3 points in the NFL, in the playoffs it's even higher. And that's based on scoring that totals about 40-45 points a game on average between both clubs, whereas our totals are well in to the high 300's each week. Proporionately, the 7 points is not that big an edge.

The higher seeds deserve it IMO, regardless of which side of the coin I'm on.
If I'm a lower seed, it's just one more thing I have to overcome.

Look at it from Rami's perspective BTW, his reward as the top seed this year... to face the highest scoring team in the league, one that also has the 2nd best record in the league. He deserves the slight edge. All higher seeds deserve it.

I will be bringing it up this offseason. Just because you never fixed this in Frenzy does not mean we have to suffer through the same crap in this league.

If you are not going to do it in the regular season there is no place for it in the playoffs.

No matter how much we pretend this is not the NFL and trying to bring in vegas lines is nonsensical - especially since we are not doing it in the regular season.

I think it is a rule that provides NO benefit and unfairly penalizes teams. I would be against this rule no matter what my seeding is.

If a team makes it to the playoff he deserves to be there. Period. Case closed. End of Story.

It is hypocritical to put 4 teams into the playoffs then penalize two of them. If you don't think two of them deserve to be there then only have two teams go to the playoffs.

I would rather have 3 teams make the playoffs (with the top seed getting a bye) with no wildcard team than the system we currently have. If you have an issue with a wildcard team making the playoffs then lets get rid of the wildcard. But once the teams are in the playoffs do not penalize some of them.

There is no reason to handicap or apply lines to the game. If I want to play lines I will call up vegas and put some $ on a game.

I never liked it in the Frenzy and brought it up the past 2 years when I won the Central, but I'm the only one who's complained so I doubt it changes in the Frenzy. I forgot all about it when we started SAC'D...mea culpa. I don't see the logic behind it either, Skippy. And in fact I will support your case in the off-season to remove this idiotic rule.

edit: oh yeah, and i think we should take a cue from MLB and put in a rule that if the #1 seed and the Wild Card team are in the same division, then the #1 seed plays the lowest seeded division winner and the #2 seed plays the Wild Card

Bring it up in the off-season and let majority rule... I have no problem with that, what bothered me was you're earlier statement that if it doesn't go you'll quit the league. That's a bit of an overreaction Noah.

Who knows, maybe the Frenzy will vote it out too, maybe they won't touch it. Fact is, it exists this year, and bitching and moaning won't acomplish anything. I've tried explaining why my leagues generally have a HF edge, you don't like it, which is fine. It's a democratic league, the will of the league as a whole will prevail.

Maybe it was an overreaction but I feel very strongly (obviously) this this is an unfair rule.

You either let a team into the playoffs or you don't. But once they are there everyone should be on an equal footing.

As an outsider, my opinion doesn't mean anything, but if I were a part of this league, I would be opposed to this homefield rule as well.

One point that Skippy failed to mention is 12D, the "Tie game goes to the higher seed" rule. In essence, the "road" team could overcome the -7 point home field advantage and STILL LOSE the game. And not just any game, a PLAYOFF game that the owner worked hard all year just for the right to compete in.

It is possible that what would have been a 7 point LOSS in regular season action becomes a win for the higher seed. This would be rare, sure, but the possiblity is there.

Pat, I just reviewed the Frenzy boards. When did you bring up the homefield issue? We never voted on eliminating or changing it that I can tell. Nor can I find any discussion on the matter.

As for your 1 vs 4 division comment, who's to say the #3 seed from the other division isn't a better team than the WC team. I don't think that accomplishes anything other than keeping the divisional teams apart until the championship, which is OK I suppose, but not a big deal either.

I tend to agree on this with I think it was Cheezy (hurts to say that). Main point, is if there is a HFA, it should be all year long and not just in the playoffs, if we're going to do it at all. I understand the concept and think it would be neat if we could work it in, but that will probably have a lot of discussion.

I agree with all parties, we missed it in rules discussion. Like other things (stupid e-bay end of FA), we should look into changing.

Come on, Skippy. I need all the help I can get (beating the same team three times in one season is tough!!!). Oh, did I just say I already beat you twice. How did that happen.LOL

Definitely. I don't like this rule. Fortunately I've been waxed in each of my previous post season appearances (as far as I can remember) so I haven't been personally screwed by it.

I like the HFA idea but maybe we should have it at like 3 or 4 points rather than seven (particularily if the home team would get the win in the event of a tie). Of course, I have never sniffed the playoffs so what do I know!

Well, since everyone else seems to be chiming in, I guess I will also. I think giving extra points to a team is just wack! And giving the tie to the home team is acceptable, but I still don't like it. I'd rather have the tie breaker be something more tangent, like bench points, or total TD's scored, or total of FG plus Sacks. Bench points may not be fair, since not everyone has equal number of bench players. But I agree, bring it up in the offseason again. Sounds like we may have a few rules to rehash.

Now that my vote counts...

First of all, this IMO is a PREFERENCE thing. To argue that one way is right and another is wrong doesn't hold water.

My preference is to KEEP the HFA. Here are some of my thoughts as to why

FF is SUCH an unpredictable game. How often does the last-place team outscore the first-place team? Often enough...14 games is usually enough time to sort out the good teams from the bad (even that is questionable though). If you go 14-2 in NFL regular season, you get a HUGE reward - home field advantage. Other teams are punished for not having as good of a record by having to go on the road to beat you. It surely is worth a good 5-8 points. Here, where scores are a good 5x the normal NFL score, 7 points is NOT even close to the same advantage. I think a team that has consistently performed well throughout the season DESERVES a buffer for an average game. 7 points is hardly enough, but it will suffice for me.

Again, this is simply my preference. I want the highest seeds rewarded, as I am operating under the assumption that on average, a division winner will usually be a stronger team than a wild card.

Currently, my opinion is that with scores over 200, and the fact that I don't think it has yet to come into play, I do not strongly oppose the HFA.

I've played in a league where we had it all year long. It was actually kinda fun. :) Nothing like seeing the schedule come out just to find that not only do you have to play your nemesis on your stud RBs bye week, you have to go to his house! Ack!

Good posting. Oh I remember the day in that former league known as the CDL, when I went an unreal 15-0, only to be upset in the bowl by a few points.
